San Pedro de Alcantara is a bustling Andalucian village with countless activities and attractions that unacquainted visitors to the town might, miss. This aim of this concise San Pedro de Alcantara Shopping Guide is to point visitors to this white village towards the best shopping areas rather than promote individual businesses.
Calle Marques del Duero
Calle Marques Del Duero runs through the centre of the town running from the N-340 and terminating at Church Square. Here you will find the local tourist information office and police station. From a shopper’s perspective, Calle Marques De Duero has a lot to offer including an upmarket upmarket furniture outlet, to bodegas cafes and restaurants, clothes shops, shoe shops, baby’s clothes and prams, jewellery shops, estate chemists and hotels.
One weekend in every month during the off season, Calle Marques De Duero also doubles as a Sunday market where local traders set up stall and offer every kind of local produce, products and freshly roasted chestnuts.
Buying Stamps and Cigarettes
If you are a Brit visiting this region of Spain for the first time you me be surprised that newsagents and supermarkets do not sell cigarettes. Laws are slightly different here and to buy tobacco products you must to visit a tobacconist. Tobacconists also double as estancos which, apart from the post office, estancos are the only other place you can legally buy postage stamps in Spain. Being a tourist area you will also find that most tobacconists also sell postcards.
Church Square or Plaza de Iglesia
On Plaza de Iglesia, referred to locally as Church Square, you will find a beautiful Franciscan church built in the 1866 by the Marques del Duero. The square hosts many markets and musical events throughout the year as well being very popular amongst local Spanish families for Sunday paseo (strolling and socializing – probably best described as ‘promenading’). On the north side of the square next to the church lies the town hall which was the original administrative center of the colony and residence to Marques del Duero and his family.
On the square you will also find cafes, restaurants and bars with terraced areas where you can relax in the shade enjoy the entertainment or simply people watch.
The Beach and Paseo.
San Pedro enjoys over 4km of beautiful beaches and modern promenade which hosts numerous chiringuitos famous for delicious seafood dishes. On a clear day both the Rock of Gibraltar and the Northern Coast of Africa are clearly visible from here. The beach is clean and the water clear and warm making it perfect for families with kids.
You can literally buy anything your heart desires in San Pedro de Alcantara, from a thoroughbred Lamborghini (no I’m not joking) to an ice cold beer, whatever you want you will find it in San Pedro de Alcantara.
